As you study the various marketing activities, you may have thought, at one point or another, “I’d like a job like that”, or you may have said “I think I’d like to work for an outfit like that.” However, for the past few months your main concern probably has been to learn enough about marketing to get a good grade in this course. Now, perhaps, you can devote some attention to the career opportunities that exist in the broad field of marketing.
Various companies, institutions and other organizations provide jobs and career opportunities in marketing. About a quarter to one-third of all civilian jobs are in the field of marketing. This wide variety of jobs also covers a wide range of qualifications and aptitudes. The personal qualifications and aptitudes of different individuals make them candidates for some type of marketing job. Jobs in personal selling, for example, call for a set of qualifications that are different from those in marketing research. And a person likely to be successful in advertising, say, for the Australian business directory, may not be a good prospect in physical distribution.
So how do you choose which career in marketing is best for you? The fundamentals involved in building a marketing program are applicable regardless of whether you are marketing a product, service, person, idea or place. You can apply these fundamentals to a program designed to market yourself in the industry. In other words, you can use a marketing approach to get a career. It can also be used in seeking jobs and careers in any field.
